# Ignoring files

> Leave lockfiles, snapshots, and generated code out of the review.

Ignored files are left out of the changed-file list and the diff Otto reviews. Otto can still read them for context, for example to check how a generated type is used.

```yaml otto.yml theme={null}
version: 1
reviews:
  ignore:
    - '**/*.snap'
    - 'fixtures/**'
    - 'src/generated/**'
```

Ignored files also:

* Don't count toward the 100-file limit for automatic reviews, so ignoring generated code can bring a large PR back under it.
* Don't count when Otto picks the [review depth](/configuration/review-depth) or decides which [path instructions](/configuration/instructions#path-instructions) apply.

Globs match the full path from the repository root. Use `**/` to match at any depth. See [Globs](/configuration/otto-yml#globs).

## Default ignores

Once a repository has an `otto.yml`, Otto also ignores this built-in list unless you set `default_ignores: false`. Each pattern matches at any depth.

| Group | Patterns |
| - | - |
| Lockfiles | `package-lock.json`, `npm-shrinkwrap.json`, `yarn.lock`, `pnpm-lock.yaml`, `bun.lock`, `bun.lockb`, `Cargo.lock`, `Gemfile.lock`, `composer.lock`, `poetry.lock`, `Pipfile.lock`, `uv.lock`, `go.sum`, `packages.lock.json`, `Podfile.lock`, `pubspec.lock`, `mix.lock`, `flake.lock` |
| Build output | `dist/`, `build/` |
| Minified files | `*.min.js`, `*.min.css` |
| Source maps | `*.map` |
| Vendored code | `vendor/`, `node_modules/`, `third_party/`, `third-party/` |
| Generated code | `__generated__/`, `*.generated.*`, `*.pb.go`, `*_pb2.py`, `*_pb2_grpc.py` |

<Note>
  Without an `otto.yml`, Otto ignores nothing. Committing an `otto.yml` with
  only `version: 1` turns on the default ignores.
</Note>

## Turning the defaults off

Set `default_ignores: false` if your repository keeps source code in one of these places, for example a `build/` directory of build scripts or a Go `vendor/` directory you want reviewed:

```yaml otto.yml theme={null}
version: 1
reviews:
  default_ignores: false
  ignore:
    - '**/pnpm-lock.yaml'
    - '**/dist/**'
```

The defaults are all or nothing: to keep some of them, turn them off and list the ones you want in `ignore`.
